The Active and Passive Voice

(La voz activa y pasiva)

 La voz activa es donde se enfoca la acción del verbo en el sujeto.  Cuando se quiere dar más importancia a la acción y no a quien la ha realizado, utilizamos la voz pasiva.

Ejemplos:

La voz activa

Adriana ate all of the cookies. (Adriana se comió todas las galletas.)

La voz pasiva

All of the cookies were eaten by Adriana. (Todas las galletas fueron comidas por Adrianal.)

Grammatical Rules (Reglas gramaticales)

  La voz pasiva se forma con el verbo auxiliar "to be" y el participio pasado del verbo.

Estructura Sujeto + verbo auxiliar (to be) + participio pasado.

Ejemplos:

·         The speech is written for the president. (El discurso está escrito para el presidente.)

·         The house was built in 1975. (La casa fue construida en 1975.)

·         My wallet has been stolen. (Ha sido robada mi cartera.)

·         The room will be cleaned while we are out. ( La habitación se limpiará mientras estemos fuera.)

Para transformar una oración activa a pasiva tenemos en cuenta los siguientes puntos:

1.    El objeto de la oración activa pasa a ser el sujeto de la pasiva.

2.    El verbo principal se sustituye por el auxiliar "to be", en su mismo tiempo, junto al verbo principal en participio.

3.    El sujeto de la oración principal pasa a ser complemento agente de la pasiva.

4.    Si hacemos mención en la oración del sujeto que realiza la acción (sujeto agente), este irá normalmente precedido por la preposición "by".

Ejemplos:

Mark Twain wrote the book. → The book was written by Mark Twain. 

(Mark Twain escribió el libro. → El libro fue escrito por Mark Twain.)

La estructura básica es: sujeto + (to be) + participio pasado. 

Tiempo verbal	Ejemplo en pasiva
Present simple	The film is directed by John Smith (La película está dirigida por John Smith).
Present continuous	The film is being directed by John Smith (La película está siendo dirigida por John Smith).
Past simple	The film was directed by John Smith (La película fue dirigida por John Smith).
Past continuous	The film was being directed by John Smith (La película estaba siendo dirigida por John Smith).
Present perfect	The film has been directed by John Smith (La película ha sido dirigida por John Smith).
Past perfect	The film had been directed by John Smith (La película había sido dirigida por John Smith).
Future (will)	The film will be directed by John Smith (La película será dirigidapor John Smith).
Future (be going to)	The film is going to be directed by John Smith (La película va a ser dirigida por John Smith).
Verbos modales	The film should / might / must be directed by John Smith (La película debería / podría / debe ser dirigida por John Smith).

Ejercicio

Trata de corregir los errores que hay en la pasiva de estas frases:

1.  John took to hospital in an ambulance.

2.  The new metro station is been built at the moment.

3.  This book is great -it's written for JK Rowling, and I love her books.

4.  Rosa Parks borned in 1913, and was an important civil rights activist.

5.  The book was writen in 2017.
